I love my office ! When I sit at my desk I am surrounded by everything that is important in my life; pictures of my wife and daughters, thousands of books, souvenirs from places I have traveled, replicas of motorcycles and coffee mugs, just to name a few.
As I consider my mug collection, I travel down memory lane, because every mug tells a story. The White mug with the red and green dragon was a gift from my daughter Emily when she traveled by herself to China at 16 years old, and reminds me to always trust God with my children.
The Civil War mug from Gettysburg entitled “The high tide”, reminds me of the Mid- Atlantic leadership Conference that I attended for 20 years in Gettysburg Pennsylvania and all of the wonderful friendships that were formed there.
The blue and gold “March for Jesus” mug reminds me of my Washington D.C. years when my wife and I organized the March for Jesus in that city for seven years. Each year it grew and more Christians boldly took to the streets to simply proclaim that Jesus was the most important thing in their lives.
The maroon and tan mug with the words; Pastor…is one who speaks to your spirit, listens to your heart and understands what words you can never say. I always keep this mug directly across from me, within my daily view. It reminds me every day that I am called to shepherd God’s children, loving them and understanding them.
Then of course there are my “travel mugs”, that is places I have traveled to such as the Honduras mug that remind me of the abject poverty experienced by so many in the world. The Memphis mug, the Canada mug and the North Carolina mug that remind me of my many motorcycle trips and the fun and adventure that I experienced. God is not a kill-joy but instead wants His children to experience full lives.
Time and space limits me to speak of all the the mugs in my collection, but let me close this blog entry by mentioning one particular mug and one collection of mugs. The collection is my Starbucks collection, I have “City” mugs from various cities both in the US and abroad. Not only do these mugs remind me of my travels to those cities, but also that life is to be enjoyed as Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes…..”So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun” Ecclesiastes 8:15
And finally my green and tan mug that reads in very large letters CHARACTER , and in smaller letters reads; is who you are when no one but God is watching. This final mug reminds me that character protects my gift. Someday you need to come to my office and I will give you a first class tour of the mugs and then we will sit and fellowship over a good cup of Starbucks coffee.
